Ranger vs. Ranger - RESULTS

My wife and I are sitting here ready to check the final vote. I am typing this as we go...

Me: Well, you won.

Her: By how many votes?

Me: About 300.

Her: I won't lie. I do think it's a better song. And I'm happy people voted to agree with me for whatever reason.

Me: I think you're all crazy.

Her: Unlike you, I'm not going to rub this in your face. I'm not sure you would extend the same courtesy to me if the tables were turned.

Me: And all I can say is, when evil arrives and the Mystic Force Rangers show up -- don't be surprised when all they do is start popping and locking and not saving your ass.

Her: You have no idea the kind of power dance can wield. In Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo those kids SAVED THE COMMUNITY CENTER! (And I also think your readers were just being nice to me.)

Me: I dunno. This is a sad day for the sport of theme song evaluation.

(I'm working on talking to the composer of Ninja Storm. This isn't over. I will brave this storm like the mighty Power Ranger Ninjas.)

You're nuts, and I said so as soon as my wife and I listened to the clips. Mystic Force OWNS. Your taste in this matter has led me to lose a lot of respect for you. I've already taken of my W.W.S.D. bracelet.
As always, great post. Keep 'em coming!

Posted by: Black Ranger at December 5, 2007 1:24 PM

Wow, Mystic Force stoops to new levels of suck. Although my 3 boys 10, 8, and 5 voted for it. But what do those clowns know?

Posted by: Lizardqueen at December 5, 2007 1:37 PM

Mad Props to ya wife for the Breakin' 2 ref.

Ozone and Turbo out.

(the two kickworm away...)

Posted by: Ozone and Turbo at December 5, 2007 1:41 PM

they both sound really nice if you play them at the same time...

Posted by: tttracy at December 5, 2007 1:45 PM

It kind of hurts me inside that y'all referred to Ninja Storm as a rock song. Or maybe it's just that I know I'll never get rid of this tic brought on by the "Go! Power Rangers! Go! Let's GO!"

Posted by: Hearsawho at December 5, 2007 1:46 PM

You forgot that your wife is right. Breakin, Breakin 2, You Got Served, Stomp the Yard, Honey and other incredible classics all showcase dancing's ability to conquer the impossible!

It's time to learn from our mistakes, send Broadway to Iraq!

Posted by: Joel at December 5, 2007 1:46 PM

Oh man! I can't believe Ninja Storm lost! It sounded so fierce. That's what made me vote for it, ultimately; the Mystic Force crew might be popping and locking, but the Ninja Storms are doing battle a little more subtly. That song haunted me for DAYS after hearing it. I'm still not completely over it.

Posted by: becky at December 5, 2007 2:02 PM

I can't believe that piece of hip-hopish rhymes won over a rock song. It's indeed the end of the world as we know it. At least we have two sets of Power Rangers to save us, no?

Posted by: crazy.neo at December 5, 2007 2:06 PM

I think the votes may have been skewed slightly by the update. After all, it was tied when you posted the update and revealed who had chosen which song. Now, just enough votes swing your wife's way to allow Mystic Force to win.

Something tells me that people remembered the Steve Don't Eat It where you drank breast milk, the (imaginary) breast milk fight with your son, the fact that you wanted her to vomit because of your fart while she was pregnant and about 90% of the other posts on here and felt sorry for her. The pity votes are what caused you to lose...or at least, you can tell her this to preemptively counter any gloating.

(Full disclosure: I voted for Mystic Force before knowing who chose which song.)

Posted by: Craig at December 5, 2007 2:13 PM

Like I said in a post to you in the heat of the battle, check the video versions of these on YouTube (each show's "opening credits,") and you'll see proof of concept in the Mystic Storm credits. Right about 51 seconds in, they start poppin' and locking. Suddenly I don't feel so safe with the Mystic Force to look after me.
Fight on, Steve!

Posted by: 'nother Steve at December 5, 2007 2:14 PM

Any intergalactic crime fighting organization (is that what the Power Rangers are? I really have no idea...) must be judged on the merits of their theme song. Play "Mystic Force" as you arrive on the battle scene, and the enemies must halfway expect you to show up in an armor-plated Escalade with the pants on your battle suit hanging halfway down your buttocks.

But the "Ninja Storm" song gives you the impression that you're going to be dealing with some scrappy nuvo-punk brawlers who'll be busting out the 5-irons on your criminal head.

Posted by: Hertz Donut at December 5, 2007 2:25 PM

I'm just disappointed that I'm discovered badass music like this so late in my life...so much time wasted, it's heart breaking.

Posted by: Kyle at December 5, 2007 2:25 PM

Mystic Force's synth hip-hop opens a can of whoop-ass on the tired 80's power rock of Ninja Storm.

Church.

; )

Posted by: SouthernBelle at December 5, 2007 2:26 PM

I voted Mystic Storm. Not knowing anything about Power Rangers, I approached the music more objectively. It's the one I'd be more likely to listen to if it were actual music instead of a kid show theme song.

Posted by: Jon at December 5, 2007 2:28 PM

Er, that's Mystic Force. Maybe subconsciously the two are so evenly bad I'm confusing them. Mystic Force, that's the more hip-hoppy one. That's the one I voted for.

Posted by: Jon again at December 5, 2007 2:30 PM

Mystic Force is way more anthemic. Game over.

Posted by: Andrew at December 5, 2007 2:32 PM

Wow, try playing both clips at the same time...they should have used THAT song.

Posted by: APT at December 5, 2007 2:51 PM

I voted for Mystic Force for several reasons:

1) I find the mere fact that a children's show would co-opt the hip-hop genre infinitely more hilarious than the idea that it would co-opt the crappy pop rock genre.

2) The beginning of the Mystic Force theme sounds more like the opening of a traditional children's show theme song -- thereby increasing the cognitive dissonance once the hip-hop kicks in.

3) Most importantly, the Ninja Storm theme song peaks WAY too soon. There's an obvious point about two-thirds of the way through when it sounds like the song SHOULD end, but then it just keeps going like a bad comedy sketch.

Posted by: Elise at December 5, 2007 2:52 PM

I, too, voted for Mystic Force before knowing who's song was what. I used the scientific method of which one would drive me less insane having to hear it over and over again every morning while my kids sat glued to the rectangular babysitter.

This is also why the LazyTown theme song is better than the wonderpets theme song. It doesn't make me want to erupt in a murderous rage. Which I'm sure you will agree is probably a good thing when you are in charge of two small children.

Posted by: Wendy at December 5, 2007 2:55 PM

I think I now want to change my vote after hearing Steve's explanation for his choice. I made my decision without thinking of the cosmic repercussions. Kick'n ass has always been done with a rockin beat. Just imagine Rocky 3 with a pussy dance beat instead of Eye of the Tiger.

Posted by: Jeff at December 5, 2007 2:55 PM

I think both are inferior to the unbelievably awesome Power Rangers SPD theme, and even Mystic Force barely beats the Operation Overdrive theme.

Posted by: JJBird at December 5, 2007 2:58 PM

Just so you know, I voted for the song before I knew your wife picked. Sorry, but she has better taste in music!

Posted by: Alejandrina at December 5, 2007 3:06 PM

I was not just being nice. Mystic Force kicks ass. Ninja Storm is just.....weak. Don't worry though, I don't think less of you for liking it. Well, okay, maybe a little less. But only a little.

Posted by: Hollee at December 5, 2007 3:09 PM

As a proud voter for Mystic Force I feel like I need to defend my choice.
Mystic force had a different feel to it, Ninja force sounded like every other power rangers version warmed over and vomited back out.

Mystic force may not have training montage abilities but it has a refreshing new groove.

Posted by: Mark at December 5, 2007 3:11 PM

Let's not count out the DinoThunder theme song now! That one really ROCKS! It just oozes kick-assedness!

Posted by: Jodi Nipper at December 5, 2007 3:17 PM

I voted for Mystic Force. The Ninja song sounds like a bad garage band from the 80's. Eww.

Your wife has good taste. She picked Mystic Force and she wouldn't eat the corn smut. Smart girl.

Posted by: Compwalla at December 5, 2007 3:27 PM

Dude, Steve. I'm totally a rocker girl and don't care for hip-hop nearly as much. But Mystic Force kicks Ninja Storm's ass by a mile.

It sorta reminds me of Linkin Park...sorta. Of.

Anyway...wife wins. You own her "something", don't you think? ;-)

Posted by: LelĂȘ at December 5, 2007 3:38 PM

Personally, I voted for Ninja Storm, but I've got a lot of things against any of the new Power Rangers. Original was totally the best one ever. I <3 Tommy/ the White Ranger...

Posted by: Mande at December 5, 2007 3:49 PM

Okay, the BEST version of the Power Rangers theme was, is, and only can be the MIGHTY MORPHIN' POWER RANGERS. Long live the Mighty Raw (the composer).

Seriously, trust me on this, I've watched EVERY season. The first wins, hands down.

Wonderful World. Beautiful People.

Everyone has a Reason, no one is Reasonable and your kid goes wacky for 12 Raisins. (Merry Christmas BTW Steve and Family!)

I want to hear and see the Power-Rangers-Dreadlock-I-and-I-Mystic-Babylon-Erasin'-Force music and credits before I really decide.

Posted by: 'nother Steve at December 5, 2007 3:58 PM

This is a travesty of justice.

I only wish I had checked the site to find out about this while I could still vote for the Al Gore of childrens' theme songs.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Posted by: Dan at December 5, 2007 4:03 PM

Mystic Force is TERRIBLE....

Posted by: Jody at December 5, 2007 4:06 PM

The Mystic Force song is hip-hop if you also consider linkin park hip hop. I Think it's more pop than anything. I voted for Ninja Storm, so later for the fake-hip-hop-wannabe-rockin' theme song...(but yay for the Electric Boogaloo reference!)

Posted by: Teresa at December 5, 2007 4:08 PM

Those Power Ranger outfits look better for dancing anyhow.

Also, oddly enough, your wife rocks!

Posted by: Glen at December 5, 2007 4:13 PM

The Ninja Storm song made me feel like our Powerful saviors were a bunch of lazy high-school kids. "How many times do I have to tell you?! LETS GO!"

Wait, they are lazy high-school kids? Hmm, maybe that is the better choice, then.

I recall being in 6th grade when the first round of live-action-wanna-be-Voltron spewed all over our television. One of our students running for school president tapped into the new show and had the dagger-wielding green ranger yelling "It's Morphin' Time" in a colorful speech bubble.

This led to a wonderful little 'emergency assembly' in which the Principle explained that it is not ok to use drug-related material in the campaigns and that morphine was nothing we should be excited about. The posters were quite literally ripped from the walls and disposed of.

Sometimes the Leader of the pack needs to sit with their masses and figure out what's going on...

Posted by: Barf at December 5, 2007 4:13 PM

I like the rock, but I voted for Mystical Force because, if it was bad, it was bad Outkast, which I find more tolerable than bad Survivor for a number of reasons.

Posted by: agc at December 5, 2007 4:14 PM

i just can't wait for the guitar hero version of ninja storm............

Posted by: diana at December 5, 2007 4:15 PM

Mystic Force sounds like a rejected Black Eyed Peas, I voted for it anyway. The other one had to may "GOs" for me to handle.

p.s.
Wendy, nothing can anger me more than having to hear The Wonder Pet's theme song.

Posted by: Kate at December 5, 2007 4:20 PM

Ninja Storm owns. I totally agree with Steve. While the Mystic Force kids are poppin and lockin, the Storm Rangers will pop and ROCK the crap out of those evildoers.

Posted by: Jenna at December 5, 2007 4:20 PM

Dude. Ninja Storm is way better...mystic force sounds like the power rangers went ghetto or something. WHUT. At least the Ninja Storm one has like, a little repetition that doesn't include the Power Ranger's actual name. It's like they're trying to...to...mature!! Or something! What the hell?!

Posted by: katie at December 5, 2007 4:23 PM

I voted for Ninja Storm, but I sort of felt that this was akin to a contest about whose farts smell better - which is to say I wasn't choosing the song I liked more, but rather the song I found less abhorrent.

Posted by: Colinski at December 5, 2007 4:29 PM

I thought both song sucked, so I voted for Mystic... uh... you know, the one that starts with Mystic.

Posted by: Jimmy at December 5, 2007 4:41 PM

Seriously though, the original Power Rangers theme kicks the ass out of both of those. So very, very hard it's not even funny.

Posted by: HyperOnion at December 5, 2007 5:06 PM

if you're going to try and talk with the composers of Ninja Storm, and I think your wife deserves that you contact the Mystic Force composer as well.

Posted by: steele at December 5, 2007 5:11 PM

how could you not vote for ninja storm? it's almost nastalgic how it sounds so much like the original power rangers theme song. and for the record, the original power rangers could kick the what-what out of all the other power rangers. COMINBINED. and i also realize it's sad that I have nothing better to do with my time then talk about power rangers haha

Posted by: Bill Choda at December 5, 2007 5:26 PM

Power Rangers Light Speed rescue theme was the best, I loved that show

Posted by: ANDREW at December 5, 2007 5:39 PM

Honestly Mystic force sounds so ghetto and dirty =(

Ninja storm sorta relates to the original theme which was the best whilst i dun c how power rangers can be related to hip hop gangsta rap

Posted by: Pie at December 5, 2007 5:43 PM

Ninja Storm is a better theme song for the Power Rangers, but Mystic Force has a better song in general. However, I still think that the theme song for Mighty Morphing Power Rangers is the best. GO GO POWER RANGERRRS

Posted by: Nettie at December 5, 2007 5:51 PM

Ninja storm has an AMAZING theme. Not only is it PURE AWESOME, but its also considerably more power-ranger-y.

Mystic force is just lame...

Posted by: Toronto's Steve at December 5, 2007 5:58 PM

Pop lockin Power Rangers... brilliant

Posted by: Prost8 at December 5, 2007 6:20 PM

Maybe you'll like Mystic Force if you sing it the way I do:

"Oh no, the Power Rangers! The stupid Power Rangers! I hate the Power Rangers MYSTIC FORCE!"

Works for me.

Posted by: Iris at December 5, 2007 6:27 PM

I voted for Mystic Force. Is it just me or does it sound like Andre 3000 decided to slum it and write this? In the end, Ninja Storm is laughably generic bad pop rock and MF actually has a bit of character, even though that character might be quite derivative.

Posted by: Brockdogavitch at December 5, 2007 6:27 PM

I just saw Adam Savage from Mythbusters on tv with a Tree Brains tee shirt.

Posted by: vc at December 5, 2007 6:34 PM

Though Ninja Storm is *so* generic pop rock, I dislike hip hop enough to vote for Ninja Storm. Mystic Force sounds terrible to me.

Posted by: Brian at December 5, 2007 6:35 PM

Mystic Force is a total rip off of Outcast's "Hey Ya," which has been ingrained in my head from repeated play to the point where it outshines the macarena. And that is why I chose Ninja Storm.

Posted by: rachel at December 5, 2007 6:36 PM

To Steve's wife:

ARE YOU CRAZY? Seriously, Mystic Force is the worst Power Rangers song EVER!!!!

Ninja Storm, on the other hand, is a music theme made of win, delicious cake and awesomeness levels previously unknown to mankind.

Just look at the name. NINJA STORM!! It's like, it's raining ninjas!!!!

Posted by: Archer at December 5, 2007 6:56 PM

When I listened to Ninja Storm, I thought, "typical lame ass 80s style generic action theme song." But then I clicked on Mystic Force, and it made me immediately think of Ralph's Potted Meat. And that Ralph is _still_ a dick.

I voted for NS twice - from work and home - and still, the tide of suckaged washed us sensible folk out to sea in a psunami of pureed offal...

Posted by: scAFFNET at December 5, 2007 7:22 PM

I gotta agree with Hertz Donut. I'd trust my life far more with a bunch of "get down to business" punkass brawlers than some hip-hop fools trippin' over their bling and baggy/flappy pants. Ninja Storm ftw.

Posted by: Wrex at December 5, 2007 7:23 PM

Hi Steve--

My opinion of your wife dropped when I first listened to your CLEARLY BETTER selection, but it went back up when she took the high road and didn't rub your face in it.

I think you should ask the kids for their votes and factor those two (weighted, of course) in to the score.

--Jill

Posted by: colinshotsister at December 5, 2007 7:30 PM

I agreed with many that "Mystic Force" (which I voted for; it just seemed way less repetitive and ADHD than "Ninja Storm"...plus I could imagine smacking my woman's ass on the dancefloor to it, while I can only imagine having a seizure to "Ninja Storm") sounded a lot like Andre 3000 from Outkast. But did anyone else think "Ninja Storm" sounds a lot like the power pop band Sum 41?

Posted by: Steve #276 at December 5, 2007 7:36 PM

I voted both ways, just to add extra confusion.

You're welcome.

But the truth is the loud one made my brain hurt.

Posted by: pjcamp at December 5, 2007 7:38 PM

I voted for the Mystic Force....Sorry but it was better, even if they just pop and lock.

Posted by: derrickgott007 at December 5, 2007 7:57 PM

Oh yeah I forgot...

Turkey Log forever Bitches!!!!!

Posted by: derrickgott007 at December 5, 2007 7:57 PM

Wow, am I the only one that got a needlessly "urabn" vibe off of Mystic Force? Why should we be thinking that better for a show about some C-rated actors flying in front of a blue screen for Children?

In short: Too much P. Diddy.

Posted by: Gea at December 5, 2007 8:04 PM

I voted for the Mystic Force theme both times. It sounded a lot like a Black Eye Peas song (I'm a fan!).

Besides, the Ninja Storm theme sounds a lot like those new-age pop-rock songs that are always playing on those alternative music stations. I'm sure there are fans of that genre but it's a big "no" for me.

Posted by: Ivan at December 5, 2007 8:19 PM

Wait, where's the option for the original 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' theme, huh? Neither of these songs hold a candle to that one!

Jason, Tommy, Kimberly, Trini, Zack, and Billy? They would wipe the floor with the new rangers...

Posted by: Mr. Domino at December 5, 2007 8:25 PM

I had to vote Mystic Force. I could barely hear the guitar licks in the Ninja Storm, so it was just a bunch of yelling. It was like they recorded it in a flaming hotel room.

Posted by: Cryin' Joe at December 5, 2007 8:34 PM

ninja storm just wasn't musically cohesive. the lyrics also suck. mystic force ftw!

Posted by: mr_d at December 5, 2007 8:50 PM

mystic all the way my friend.
ninja storm, what were your ears thinking???

Posted by: cathleen at December 5, 2007 9:45 PM

With all due respect to Mrs. Sneeze, Ninja Storm is the much better song, it sounds like a Cheap Trick song too. That said she makes a good point about the kids in Breakin' 2.

Posted by: will at December 5, 2007 9:56 PM

Dude, how can Ninja storm not win? I mean it's about ninja, ninja always win.

Excuse me while I go die of the flu.

Posted by: NeuralSpike at December 5, 2007 10:50 PM

I think the problem was not that it was rock vs. hip-hop per se, but that it's kind of a sucky rock song. I mean, c'mon, at least the Mystic Force theme sticks in your head. Ninja Storm is just about as generic as generic can be...

Now if the Ramones or maybe Cheap Trick had done the theme, we'd be talking!

Posted by: Michael V. at December 5, 2007 11:46 PM

OK, we need MORE cheesy TV theme song head-to-head battles. We need a whole section devoted to them. Tournaments! Falcon Crest vs. Dynasty. Saved by the Bell vs. Moesha. Simon & Simon vs. Magnum PI. 90210 vs. Melrose. Thundercats vs. Defenders of the Earth. Arrrgh! The possiblities are endless!!!

Posted by: Henry at December 6, 2007 1:12 AM

Ninja Storm is clearly the superior song, I agree that Mystic Force gives too much of an impression of gangster-ific rangers leaping out of an armored Escalade in their street clothes for a dance off with evil. Oh, and Archer, while you make a good point, you are getting dangerously close to breaking Rules 1 & 2

Posted by: Anonymous at December 6, 2007 1:32 AM

I voted for "Mystic Force" before the update. I really dislike the rock on kids' show theme songs, but I usually find the attempts at hip hop-ish music even more offensive. "Mystic Force" wasn't bangin, but it was better executed than "Ninja Storm."

Posted by: gordon gartrelle at December 6, 2007 2:04 AM

Without a penalty for the loser, the results are meaningless. Let's face it, neither of you had any skin in the game.

I vote that the winner be forced to eat something.

Posted by: The Inscrutable Chicken at December 6, 2007 2:42 AM

I personally don't like either one of them. they are both extremely generic versions of their genres. I voted for Ninja Storm because I can't stand hip hop music. I think the original Power Rangers theme song was the best out of all the Power Rangers theme songs.

Posted by: KudouUsagi at December 6, 2007 3:09 AM

I voted Ninja Storm because it sounds like the traditional theme song. It pumps you up and kicks ass. Mystic Force is an Outkast song wannabe, not a theme song for a kid's show. While kids may like it because its more danceable, it doesn't have the "power" behind it. I knew it was you who picked Ninja Storm somehow. You seem like you would be in favor for the 80s-influenced song. But I voted because I honestly liked it better than Mystic Force. : )

Posted by: brutalfashion at December 6, 2007 4:29 AM

Ugh! I voted for Ninja Storm.

Maybe the Treebrains can make a song better than the both of 'em! GO, Brains!

Posted by: Sherry at December 6, 2007 4:50 AM

Yes. Dance is powerful. And in movies it's conquered many foes - attempting to be greedy or arrogant fucks that in the process got impressed by the beauty and determination of dance. Now, that said, when monster aliens under the control of world-domination seeking entities show up...dance is going to get you nowhere. And if it would somehow impress them with our quality and beauty, it wouldn't be dance to the same style voice that sings , "TO THE WINDOOOOOOOW, TO THE WALL!" Maybe we can drop that booty low enough to pop out a few more kids and the extra population can cover for the Rangers we lost when ectoplasmic ooze melted the community center.

Posted by: Shadix at December 6, 2007 5:03 AM

Power Rangers has alway been lame, hence the appeal. Mystic Force is actually too kick-ass of a theme song for Power Rangers. If you had asked which theme song best represented the lameness of the show, then Ninja Storm would have been the clear winner.

Posted by: Iris at December 6, 2007 5:16 AM

Please. The day a dance song is better than a rock song (even if the rock song is only kind-of-sort-of-like a rock song), that is the day the universe will implode.

Neither song is actually "good" per se, but Mystic Force sucks ass. When I listened to it, I could picture would-be heroes battling evil -- I pictured a bunch of retards in spandex jumpsuits walking around with fake weapons and even faker fighting moves. Oh, wait... :P

Nevertheless, Ninja Storm at least conjures a modicum of a sense of action and combat, and it is catchy in a good way. Mystic Force would only apply to action and combat if it was done in a Broadway musical.

Cheers.

Posted by: Cobra at December 6, 2007 5:33 AM

Oops. "When I listened to it, I could picture would-be heroes battling evil" should be "When I listened to it, I COULDN'T picture would-be heroes battling evil".

Sorry. :/

Posted by: Cobra at December 6, 2007 5:35 AM

I voted Mystic Force. I just can't get onboard with a rock song that I feel I could have played lead guitar for... I honestly think I could learn that song in 5 minutes, and I don't even know how to play the guitar

Posted by: Kasie at December 6, 2007 5:58 AM

I wanted to vote for Ninja Storm - I mean, come on, ninjas- but the truth is it is just terrible and about as aggressive as REO Speedwagon. Mystic Force actually had about three seconds in the middle of genuine, listenable pop.

Posted by: Thomas Gresham at December 6, 2007 6:23 AM

Bah - all y'all complaining about how a strike force can't have a wimpy theme song, I've only got ONE thing to sing:

"When you're a Jet, you're a Jet all the way, from your first cigarette to your last dyin' day...."

Posted by: Sewmouse at December 6, 2007 6:44 AM

I spent an hour listening to both songs...at work. Guess which one is stuck in my head. "Here come the power rangers..Here come the power rangers..." It wins. Plus I am black on the inside.

Posted by: Brad at December 6, 2007 6:58 AM

I must say that when I listened to Ninja Storm first I didn't make it through the whole song and thought, "Well Mystic Force is going to win." Then I listened to Mystic Force, no super hero no matter how lame should have a theme song like Mystic Force. I think I would prefer to listen to the theme song to the "Monchichi's". As craptastic as Ninja Storm is, it still beats the pants off of Mystic Force. I don't think the people who voted for Mystic Force understand the whole super hero thing....

Posted by: Sad Monkey at December 6, 2007 7:15 AM

Mystic Force sucks so much hole that words cannot even express it. When the world is in danger, who do want to protect us?! Ninjas or Mystic....whatevers??

Well -- I'll be laughing as I'm hiding behind the Ninjas watching you Mystic losers get your butts kicked.
